Lohud Staff Pick: Rye vs Harrison

Saturday —
Rye (2-3) at Harrison (3-2), 1:30 p.m.:
This is the 81st edition of “The Game.” Harrison leads the all-time series 41-36-5, but Rye has won the last eight meetings to tie for the longest winning streak in the rivalry’s history. The Garnets have qualified for the postseason every year since the state playoffs were installed in 1993, but that streak is on the line Saturday. They are also in jeopardy of being saddled with that dreaded third league loss. But this is a different Rye team. Yes, they started this season 0-3 before moving Jake Meyerson to tailback, Joe Simolacaj to fullback and inserting Andrew Livingston at quarterback. Livingston is a key player. He is the first Rye freshman quarterback ever to start against Harrison under Dino Garr, who will coach against the Huskies for the 31st time. Harrison, however, has added its own new weapon in speedy Will Hilliard, who has been paired with Robert Waldman, Steve DeLeo and company to add another dimension to the running game. Ultimately, it appears Rye enters the game as the bigger team, while Harrison is more dynamic. Rye’s vast improvement should make this into another classic, but it should be Harrison’s time to stop years of Garnet momentum. PREDICTION: Harrison 17, Rye 13
