Heading into this season I think there was plenty of optimism regarding Rye. If they could have stayed remotely healthy I feel they would have finished stronger. In retrospect I think that this team did have talent, but not the depth of talent that they have had in their recent winning run since 2003. For instance, the 2005 team had Jack Donnelly at QB who was backed up by Frannie Archibald (now playing at Navy) and Jordan Eck (Hamilton) in reserve. A couple of bloggers have written about Brian Levinson a 6’2 280 lb. tackle who graduated last year. He was very under-rated because he didn’t start until his senior year. Why? Because he was playing behind some outstanding linemen, and he was weened into the line-up during his junior season on a NYS championship team. Depth. Not many HS teams could have absorbed the unusually high number of injuries that Rye did this season, and come out of it with a decent record in such a competitive league and class. There are towns where having a winning record of 5-3 with a thrilling victory over your archrival would warrant a parade…thats not going to happen in Rye…but the performance of this team should be saluted and believe me…good days lie ahead. I was told last night that the great contingent of 8th graders beat AA Suffern 40-6 after scoring 7 TD’s on their first 12 offensive plays. I saw them scrimmage New Rochelle a month or so ago…and as a result….I think my dear friend GoNewRo is going to have to consider returning back to Rye! I also think that with players like Jake Meyerson and Joe Simolacaj returning along with a dozen or so kids that saw significant playing time this year that the Garnets will be in good shape until that 42 man wave of eighth graders starts arriving on the scene in the not so distant future.
