The Rye-Harrison “Game for a Cure”

By ryerecordsports

The following was sent in by readers Sal Giglio and Jay Caruso:

Each year Rye and Harrison come together to celebrate an intense game that gives one town bragging rights for a year and memories that stay with that season’s seniors for a lifetime. Well, the two towns are coming together on October 11 for something much more important than bragging rights but will surely provide lasting memories.

The classes of 1986-1988 from Rye and Harrison will play a flag football game against each other in order to raise money and awareness for Charley’s Fund, a charity that is trying to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.   Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder to affect children around the world. Children with DMD cannot produce dystrophin, a protein necessary for muscle strength and function. As a result, every skeletal muscle in the body deteriorates. Although Duchenne is the most common fatal genetic disorder to affect children, there is no cure. DMD is 100% fatal.

Charley’s Fund is named after Charley Seckler, who is afflicted with this disease and is the son of Benjy Seckler, a 1988 Harrison High School graduate.

Through the hard work of several ex-players and graduates, The Game for a Cure, will be played on October 11 at 1 p.m. on Harrison’s Feely Field (Harrison Elementary School 480 Harrison Ave, Harrison NY 10528). The game will feature graduates from 1986-88 (coming in from all over the country), volunteer referees, cheerleaders, a band and a HHS grad who will sing the national anthem.

The 1985 and 1986 Rye-Harrison games were classics. In 1985, it was played in a heavy snow storm and Rye prevailed 7-0. The following year Rye erased a 12-0 halftime deficit, scoring the winning touchdown with less than a minute to go in the game, to win 15-12.  Harrison won in 1987 on their way to a perfect 10-0 record.
