Rye’s sixth straight Section 1 Class B championship might be its last.
Word is that the Garnets are, in fact, moving up to Class A next season after winning the last six Class B titles. Rye has won two of the last three state titles and is on the verge of at least contending for a third.
What does this mean? Well, with Byram Hills also apparently moving up and Sleepy Hollow coming back down, it completely changes the landscape of the conference. Pleasantville, Edgemont, Sleepy Hollow and a few others have legitimate shots at winning titles. That really hasn’t been an option since 2002.
The move won’t be official for a few more months. The state has to review the numbers and there are a few other steps in the process. The state could also change the classification numbers if it appears there’s a significant imbalance, which is a possibility. But from what I’m told, Rye is about 20 students over the current number.
