I’ve only covered the last five Rye-Harrison games (Rye has won all five) but have seen some incredible moments.
My favorite was in the game two years ago, which Rye won 19-18. There were actually two moments that stick in my mind — the vision of Claudio Delli Carpini making a one-handed diving touchdown catch and Franny Archibald barelling his way into the end zone for a score. Both times the plays spiked the ball in celebration.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen any high school player spike the ball after a touchdown. At first I cringed. Then it hit me how emotionally-charged this game really is. When you’re not apart of it, I guess, you can’t understand it. But in those plays I got a better sense.
What are your favorite memories? Sammy Maldonado? Art Troilo’s performance? The string of games from 1968 to ‘71 where the final scores were 0-0, 6-0, 3-0 and 2-0? I watched the game on TV when Marc Saracino led Rye to its only win in the 90s.
