From The Old Garnet:
It's the best imitation of "Where in the World are the Rye Garnets?" as Rye journeys up to Chile Kingston, NY for the New York State Class B semifinal game versus the PERU INDIANS of Section 7. Closer to sharing a border with Canada than with Ecuador these warriors come from winter-hardened stock of the western shore of Lake Champlain opposite Burlington, VT and a mere 32 miles south of the US/Canadian border. Let's just say the area could be compared with the oft-cited "Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field", a football cathedral in Green Bay, WI.
In the 2004 Rye Football Journal when summarizing the previous season, I penned, "When the Garnets and the Blue and White squared off in the 2003 state 'B' semifinal, Peru out-rushed, out-passed, out-possessed and out-first-downed the Garnets. But Rye prevailed 35-22 in a game that hinged on creativity and opportunism, special teams play and a defensive touchdown by Rye on a 51-yard fumble return by Steve Ramsey, brother of 2007 Garnet Will Ramsey.
Bolivia me, this "Old Garnet" foresees a tight one, with the Garnets possibly trailing at halftime. But it is Coaches Garr, Maloney and Bruno who provide intermission war chants to spur the Garnets over the Indians 28-16.
Did anyone notice who is playing in the Class B West Region semifinal in Rochester, none other than the Chenango Spoons Blue Devils. Oh no, not again!
Kevin Devaney also picks the Garnets 24-21, but with caution. Click here for his blog.
