The opening of football practice is 20 days away and I hope you are as eager and excited about this year's team as I am. Following last year?s Regional Championship season, we will be starting this year on Monday, August 20th at 10:00 a.m. This year?s schedule is tough and demanding and we will have very little time to prepare for our season opener at Byram Hills on September 8th. Being a part of the RYE GARNET FOOTBALL PROGRAM will be a rewarding and challenging experience for all of us.
This year's team must build and develop TEAM DEDICATION, SPIRIT, AND PRIDE. From these ingredients, we will be a team to contend with by all on our schedule, and nothing less than striving to be the best will be accepted by the coaching staff and me.
I believe that the game of football parallels life. Being a GARNET FOOTBALL PLAYER is an exceptional opportunity for a man, as it demands a rugged individual, both physically and mentally, to survive. You must set realistic personal and team goals and strive constantly toward the realization of these goals. You are going to get knocked down, but failure in the game of football, as in life, is only if you remain down. RYE FOOTBALL, in the past, and in the years to come, will set the standards for measurement by other teams.
Each player must ask himself what level of commitment he is willing to make to football this season. Are you going to be totally committed to do your job to the best of your ability? The COMMITMENT must start NOW and continue all the way through to the END of the season.
I am sure you are aware that the first few weeks of football can be really tough! Unless you are in top physical shape, the chance of early injury almost always sets a player way back in team position. It is essential you do not wait until the last minute to get into shape. Reporting to pre-season in excellent condition greatly reduces the risk of injury, and it is your obligation to give your body the best opportunity.
If you have not already started your weight and running program, I strongly advise you to concentrate immediately on your strength, agility, and speed. I will be testing you on August 20th; also you will show your strength improvement over the summer by being tested on the bench press. On August 21st you will be tested in the mile sprint. The coaching staff quickly finds out which players are below top physical condition, and I do not have any sympathy for loafers. We need speed, quickness, and dedication on our team to continue our winning tradition. We must be willing to work hard and improve ourselves together.
No player has any position secured, and the man who can do the job will be in the lineup when we open in September.
All players are expected to get together at the upper field to build team pride and unity through workouts with trainer, Matt Tauber, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. All team players should do running daily. Break the running into a speed workout one day and endurance running on the other; alternate speed, then endurance. Prepare yourself for opening sessions on August 20tht 10:00 a.m.
After you do your running and weight lifting at the fitness center, finish your workouts by having games of touch football which develops the skills of passing, running and catching the ball. You must supply your own pair of football shoes. I request that you buy the color black so that we look like a team. Also, you must supply your own combination lock. I will not issue any equipment unless a COMBINATION LOCK is shown to me. Equipment issue will begin on August 20th for all players at 9:00 a.m.
I expect you will adhere to the rules and regulations that govern all the players involving self-discipline and team discipline. You must weigh the merits and benefits of being a RYE GARNET FOOTBALL PLAYER. This includes academic success and exemplary conduct which perpetuates Garnet Pride and Tradition.
I would advise you to report well groomed and prepared to get a proper helmet fit. It is imperative to your safety to have a properly sized helmet. Remember, we do not have too many days to get ready and every practice and workout is a must if you expect to play.
All players MUST be medically cleared by the high school Health Office. Forms can be picked up and returned at the School Nurse's office. Physicals by the school physician or your own physician and clearance by the Health Office is a must in order to practice on August 20th.
