A Little Bit of Knowledge . . . . . . . . . . .
This week's NYS Class B East Regional Final opponent is the undefeated (11-0) ALBANY ACADEMY CADETS of Section 2. Founded in 1813 and with roots in the French & Indian and Revolutionary Wars, the Academy is an independent college preparatory day school with its sister institution Albany Academy for Girls. Post Civil War, the Albany Academy Cadet Battalion was organized and it endured for 130 years until 2005 when it was decommissioned and a voluntary Cadet Corps was instituted.
Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM on Saturday, November 17 at Kingston's Dietz Stadium and the Garnets will be the visiting team again this week.
Watch out for the speed of the Orange & Brown. Lopsided scores and long-gainers for touchdowns have characterized the Academy's season, and the Cadets are the leading scoring team in Section Two including all AA, A, C and D teams. They have won their 11 games by an average score of 45-14. These Cadets have jets! Watch out Garnets, speed kills.
Rye's experience against the Northern Tier of the East Region amounts to four East Region Finals:
1993 East Regional 2 Rye 28 2 Cambridge 15 (Section 2)
2003 East Regional 2 Rye 35 2 Peru 22 (Section 7)
2004 East Regional 2 Rye 21 2 Ravena 14 (Section 2)
2005 East Regional 2 Rye 41 2 Lansingburgh 8 (Section 2)
This one looks like a barn-burner with the past games predicting a Rye win by a count of 35-15, but the Old Garnet has a queasy feeling that this one, while high-scoring, will be close, say Garnets 28 2 Cadets 21.
Garnets 2006 2 this is your last stop on the "Road to Syracuse". You all will need to put forth a Harrison-esque effort and performance to get to your Syracuse goal. Have confidence in your coaches and in yourselves. If you play hard and play smart, victory will be yours. Remember football is a contest of imposing your will to win on the opponent. Impose the Garnet spirit on these Cadets and send them back to Basic Training.
Next? . . . . . The roster of future opponents has dwindled to the two West Region finalists, the Chenango Forks Blue Devils or the Geneva Panthers? . . . . . Not the Harrison Huskies!
As long as the Garnets keep winning, you can check the Rye Garnet Football Website for further news, recent game-day photos and the Old Garnet's predictions and pearls of history.
