The Rye Garnets play football in Section 1, Class B of the New York State Public High School Athletics Association ("NYSPHSAA"). Interestingly, this association includes not just public schools but some parochial and private schools as well. For NYSPHSAA purposes, New York is divided into 11 geographic sections as shown on the map.
Links to the official NYPHSAA and Section One sites can be found under the Links tab.
New York City schools are not part of NYPSHSAA Section 9 is Nassau County and Section 11 is Suffolk County. The Long Island sections have decided not to participate in the NYSPHSAA state football championship series.
The schools are also divided into classes which are determined by the student enrollment population size of the school. In October of each year the enrollment of grades 9, 10 and 11 are summed to determine the "classification placement for the following football season as the seniors will have graduated and the juniors, sophomores and freshmen then will have moved up a grade and are eligible to play varsity football. NYSPHSAA attempts on a statewide basis to have an equal number of schools in each classification (AA, A, B, C and D) and therefore periodically reviews cutoffs delineating classifications. Also, as school populations change, the class a school competes in can change.
